Obesity is disproportionately a problem for people in poverty, including the working poor, because they often have less access to affordable, healthy foods, like fresh produce (among other factors).
Is there any weight-loss or healthy eating plan available online that is geared at getting the MOST appropriate nutrition for the LEAST money? I especially want help finding a weekly menu, or a weekly shopping list.
I have already read the book "How to feed your family for under 99 cents a meal" and some of their ideas were great, but some suggestions were too labor-intensive for me (I’m not going to make my own soymilk from soybeans, etc).
Her recipes are wonderful, but the ingredients are sometimes difficult to impossible to find: leeks, couscous, scallions, sea scallops, haricots verts, arugula, smoked gouda, gruyere cheese. This is just a sample of ingredients from her "meals for the exhausted cook" section of one of her books. It would take hours just to find all these ingredients and many ordinary grocery stores don’t even carry them. I thought I was going to be buying a cookbook that would help me come up with quick meals and this is just ridiculous. I’m not trying to be critical of her because she has a great show and is a wonderful cook, but I do think her 30 minute meals books are a lot misleading. Any other complainers out there? Am I missing something?
Oops. I meant cookbooks. I do know how to spell. )
